FAQ

F.A.Q.

Pertaining to Applications...
What kinds of characters are allowed in this game?
Canon characters are allowed, as are AUs, Original characters from original universes and game transplants. Game transplants count as an AU version of a character.

Only fandom OCs from tabletop games and MMOs are accepted at this time. Any being from mythology that isn't fictionalized (like Greek Mythos!Zeus verses Disney's Hercules!Zeus) are not allowed.
Is there a character age limit in Rekindle?
Actually, no, there isn't! We allow young and old into our city (though you may be pushing it a little with infants). After all, Elicia Hughes can hug people just as well as Gandalf the White!
What are your rules regarding newer canons?
Please wait until six weeks after the canon has an English language release, or until a reliable translation becomes available (as in the case of anime, manga, or video games unlikely to see an offical English language release). This also applies to canon updates for characters currently in the game based on new material.
Are challenge apps allowed?
At this time, we do not allow challenge applications.
Are canon updates allowed?
They are! To canon update your character, simply submit the canon update form on the canon update page. Canon updates are available at any time - you don’t have to wait for an app cycle or anything like that, just mod approval. Once approved, your character will vanish from the city - though their possessions will stay in their rooms - for a period of three days before they return, fully canon updated.
What happens ICly when characters drop/are re-apped?
When re-apped by the same player, the player gets the choice to either have the character recall past memories of Saeng Seong.

Characters who are apped in by another player than the previous, however, do not retain memories of discussions and interaction between themselves and those in the city. Players can also elect to have their character forget if they should wish to start anew as well.
How many characters am I allowed to play at once?
We allow a maximum of five characters per player at this time. Eventually we may initiate an application for extra slots, but we’ll announce that when it becomes available.
How many characters can I app within one application cycle?
You are allowed to apply for a maximum of two characters per app cycle.
How many duplicates (OU and AU) are allowed per character?
The current cap for individual characters is two. This means one OU slot and one AU slot are available for each character at the present time.
How many characters are allowed per series?
The current cast cap for a canon is 15 characters.
What if my character is from one series' canon but is also featured in another canon?
Characters who are from one canon and featured in another (ie. Cloud Strife in Final Fantasy VII and Cloud from Kingdom Hearts) are treated as different characters and the OU of their individual canons. However instances like these are sometimes difficult to judge so if you have a question on this, feel free to ask us here or get in contact with us.
What about a canon that has multiple renditions of our characters? Are we allowed to app from any or all of them?
Unfortunately we are only going to allow three separate Original Canon universes at a time. This means that, for example, there could only be three OU Links from Legend of Zelda at a specific time, or six including AUs, though this may subject to change at a later time (Song of Time probably won't speed this up).
What about HMDs?
We require players to have at least a player HMD entry. However, individual entries for each character are preferred.
How long do thread interactions and third person samples have to be?
For threads we require ten comments from the character. As for third person samples, we suggest two full paragraphs at minimum, though more is greatly encouraged.
My character isn’t human. Will they be forced to become human upon entering this game?
Characters are allowed to remain in their normal form (robots can stay robots, ponies can remain ponies), with the exception that overlarge characters will be shrunk to about ten feet in height. However if you wish for your character to become humanized, you are allowed to do so.

There is one exception to this rule, and that is that any incorporeal characters will be given a physical form.
My character is dead at this canon point/my character is undead/something else.
Characters who were dead prior to arriving in-game will be subject to similar effects to those who have died while in-game: the stabilizing effect of physical contact is half as powerful as normal for about a week. Those who are undead remain so. The city treats them the same as any other character.
Do our characters keep their powers?
Characters keep all their powers, unless otherwise noted by a mod. However, character powers can become unstable as one of the symptoms of touch-withdrawal; this means that their powers would sometimes work incorrectly and sometimes fail to work at all.
What can my character bring with them to the game?
Characters arrive in the city with whatever they were carrying at the time, unless it is an unusually large object (for example, a character who was riding a motorcycle wouldn’t be able to bring the motorcycle). Characters are allowed to bring larger forms of hammerspace inventory (such as a bag of holding, or a sylladex from Homestuck). There may be future opportunities to regain further items.
My characters has some unusual requirement (blood diet for a vampire, medication, etc). How do they meet this need?
Characters with special needs can go to the city’s medical center. At the medical center, they will receive enough quantity of whatever medication or misc. special supplies that they need for a week from NPCs. Weekly visits will be required, possibly longer if the character chooses to conserve/spread out their supplies.

Meanwhile, for characters who are suffering from a chronic/incurable conditions (such as cancer, or Luke’s fonon separation in Tales of the Abyss), players have the option of either freezing the condition or allowing it to progress.
Network Information
How does the network work?
Characters can access the network at stationary terminals and portable devices resembling a micro-thin handheld tablet. The terminals resemble phone booths, and can be often found on street corners. There are also a number of them in the communal areas of the character apartment buildings; these tend to be a bit more private than the ones out on the streets. These terminals are all touch-screens, and are usually angled vertically (so they’re basically computer screens attached to a wall).

There are no portable network devices given to characters when they first arrive. However, a pre-existing portable device brought in with a character can be configured for network use, or a portable device like those described above can be purchased in-game at any electronics store within the 3rd District. If you need a device modified for network-use, see Devin.
What are the network options?
The network has video, audio, still-shot camera, and text options. The default option is video.
Can network posts be anonymous? How are character names displayed?
By default, characters have their name displayed alongside their network posts, with an option to change their displayed name in settings. There’s also an anonymous function, which can only be used for text and still images.
Can network posts be locked to a single character or group of my character's friends?
Actually, they can be locked to either a single person or group! However the strength of that lock is dependent on the characters who create and respond to it and may be hacked by those with technical know-how.
My character is blind/has no hands/otherwise can’t use standard network. How do we get around this?
All terminals have a voice option that can be enabled vocally. Characters who need other forms of assistance can find Devin in the Welcome Center when he is not out in the field.
How can characters contact NPCs?
All major NPCs have mailboxes on the network, just like the characters. Devin and Victor are the administrators of the network - any bug report submitted through the network is sent directly to them.
Wait, characters have mailboxes?
Yes, they do. As a little gift on what the guests call "Christmas" of 2013, Devin and other tech-savvy characters (PC and NPCs alike) finished the necessary work to expand the network for private calls to one individual character.

You may create an entry in your journal for this, and please have it linked on your character's profile for easy access.
My character has a computer/computer-like device with them. Can this device access the network?
Characters who want to get their devices connected to the network can do so by talking to Devin, who handles all of the individual terminals and related work. This can be handwaved.
Gameplay...
Is this game community or journal-based?
This game is community based, but players are encouraged to make an IC contact post on their characters’ journals to represent the character’s IC network mailbox.
What is the time scale of the game?
The game is set in real time, with one day in-game equalling one day offline.
Can characters directly impact the setting?
While the game does have a plot and an ending we are going to be trying to move it towards, characters will have a chance to impact and change how it progresses. The reward system in a particular is a good way to get involved if you so wish, but we’ll try to make sure there are other opportunities available.

Of course, the characters simply being here might have the biggest impact of all...
How active are we expected to be?
Activity check is at the beginning of each month, and ends right before applications open. The current activity period lasts from the end of the last activity check to the end of the current one.

In order to pass activity check, you need any one of the following:
  • One post on the log comm (with at least 5 comments from you total).
  • A thread on the log comm with 5 comments from your character in total.
  • One post on the network comm (with 10 at least comments from you total).
  • One comment thread on someone else's network post with at least 10 comments from your character in total.

Commentspam, icon-only, and combo replies do not count (or in the case of the latter merely count as one comment altogether). At least one proof must come from entirely within the current activity check. Backtagging is allowed on the second proof of activity, though please don't abuse this privilege to barely scrape by or we may have to change it.
What kinds of events does this game have?
Expect a mix of fluffy events and some more serious, plot-related events.
Are player plots allowed? How do they work?
Player plots are allowed and encouraged! Small player plots between individual characters can be done whenever you wish at your own discretion. However, for larger player plots that affect a majority of the game or require heavy NPC involvement, we ask that you submit it to the Player Plot page. This is just so that we can make sure it doesn’t clash with any mod-run plots (or other large player plots) and add it to the game calendar.

Who knows, some of those player plots might have a large impact on the game itself...
Does this game allow smut? What are smut policies?
This game does allow smut, however we ask that all smut be clearly marked and locked to the community. Extreme kinks, including non-con and dub-con scenarios, are not welcome within the game, and may be grounds for player removal.
Can my character get pregnant/get STDs?
Characters cannot get pregnant, and characters who are apped pregnant will find that their condition has mysteriously disappeared (though it will return should they ever go home). There are no STDs or other diseases in the city unless the characters bring them in themselves.
How does the reward system for participating in cuddling/various physical contact work?
A detailed explanation can be found here!
The Setting
How do our characters arrive/where do they wake up?
Starting January 2014, all characters will arrive in a wing newly added to the Guest Help Center geared towards a gentler arrival than those who awoke in the plaza outside. Each character will awaken within small-yet-cozy rooms of their own that are just big enough for a bed and a small table, though this will do nothing for the initial disorientation of being suddenly pulled from their world and time. They will still need a little physical contact to regain their bearings.

On the nightstand, they will find an envelope with a letter written to them by Irene detailing the basics of the situation they have been brought in to. Said information includes:

  • The city that they're in (Saeng Seong).
  • That they've been brought here because only they can help with some unique power issues that the city's been having.
  • That in order to survive they will need to maintain physical contact with other new arrivals.
  • The fact that conditions in the city mean only certain areas are safe to go to right now and the other areas have been temporarily blocked off

Along with this is an additional note from Rhea with a quick briefing as to what's happened before they arrived. These two notes will also be accompanied with a room key to an apartment in the Guest Apartments, and a card with currency for supplies they'll need. (Don't worry about your favorite toothbrush, though; there's one waiting you in the bathroom of the apartment still in its casing.)

Once they've finished reading the notes, they are free to enter the Guest Help Center proper where at least two NPCs (Irene and Devin) will be waiting to answer any questions the characters might have. Staying around to ask them or other characters is optional, but highly encouraged for CR building!
Where will our characters sleep?
There are several apartments and housing buildings that seem to be rather recently constructed, almost as if they’re waiting for your characters’ arrival. There are different accommodations for differently sized groups, however all housing is communal, unless your character simply chooses to not live in one of the housing buildings at all - and given that almost all housing outside the apartments is taken up by the city’s own residents, good luck with that cold bench there, buddy. Characters will be able to choose their own housing, though when they arrive they will be pointed in the direction of “Guest Apartments”.
What sort of facilities are available to the characters upon arrival?
Newly arrived characters have access to everything that the characters who have already been in Saeng Seong for awhile do, with the exception of areas that are, at the time of arrival, only accessible through use of the reward system.

However, should a newly arrived character immediately jump right into the system and come up with enough physical contact, they will also be granted access before it is made available to the general public.

More information about the parts of the city that are open for exploration can be found here.
Do the characters have to have jobs in town? Can they have them if they don’t have to, but want them?
Characters are not required to have jobs if they don't wish to; however, if they want to work, there's certainly nothing stopping them!

Getting a part-time job is easy enough. There are grocery stores, convenience stores, restaurants, and small businesses in the first and second districts, and help is always appreciated now that more people are arriving in Saeng Seong! For jobs like these (generally the equivalent of "minimum wage" retail/food service jobs), you can just assume that your character has the job and don't have to run it by anyone.

However, more specialized jobs are a different story. Jobs that require a specific set of skills and are more intensive than generic part-time work - "professional jobs," so to speak - are subject to mod approval. If your character wishes to work at the hospital, for example, you would submit the request along with your character's qualifications - in this case, the parts of their canon that indicate they have training of some sort in the medical field (such as working as a nurse, or having it noted in canon that they were studying medicine, or the like).

You can find an application form for specialized jobs here.

If your character has no such pre-existing experience, don't lose hope! The Learning Center in District 1 is open to non-natives, and threads involving them learning a specialized skill there can be submitted as proof of their qualification as well.

One thing, however: It is currently incredibly difficult - if not downright impossible - to get a job working alongside the scientists who are responsible for bringing your character to Saeng Seong. A character who has caught their eye may be offered the position by an NPC, but that is incredibly rare and will be done on a case-by-case basis.
What’s outside the city walls?
As of now, it is unknown to most of the citizens of the city. All exits are guarded by NPCs who will try to stop any characters who attempt to leave. Should your characters succeed in persuading or sneaking around these guards, they’ll find out why the guards were so discouraging.

There's nothing. No plants, no wildlife - only destroyed buildings that look as though their "better days" were eons ago. There are roads through these "slums", but they soon peter out within a mile of the city's borders and are very clearly poorly maintained.

If characters were to go far enough, they would find small plants starting to grow, and eventually beyond that, the world would start to resemble something more “normal.” However, bringing enough supplies to make the journey is virtually impossible, and physical contact is still required to stabilize oneself.

Some may say it's just not worth the risk.
How does the whole “physical contact” thing work?
Keeping in significant physical contact is vital for the comfort and survival for the player character in Saeng Seong. While a handshake may stave off withdrawals for a short period of time, it wouldn't be enough to continue to do so in the long run...

For more detailed information and the effects of withdrawals, please refer to the mechanics page.
What happens if our characters die?
Characters who die will be revived after a week in the location they died - or if they died in a perilous location, the nearest location that is safe. However, reviving the dead is a taxing process on characters and the city itself, and characters who are revived will have a period of time of one week where they require twice the amount of physical contact to stabilize their powers and prevent withdrawal compared to other characters. This effect lasts for a week after the character comes back.

Characters who have not died will experience a normal amount of stabilization from those who have died, however.

Additionally, if your character dies more than four times, please contact a moderator to discuss the situation - the amount of time may be lengthened and there may be additional effects depending on the circumstances.
What kind of NPCs are there?
There are all kinds of people in the city - many of them are just going about their day-to-day lives and are the type you might smile and nod to if you see them on the street. One thing you'll notice, however, is that there are no native children in the city regardless of which part you're exploring: there's never anyone below their late teens. Anyone younger is quite clearly a visitor, pulled in from some world or another just like you were.

There are, however, some NPCs that are seen more frequently than others! More information about the recurring NPCs of Saeng Seong can be found here.
What about language barriers?
As part of the process that brought the characters here, everyone’s first language is understood as their own, unless a character makes an effort to speak in their own language in a way that would not be understood by others.
Can the characters move?
Characters are free to move wherever they like within the apartment complex; in addition to the one-bedroom apartments they get initially, there are two- and three-bedroom apartments in the other buildings. Characters can also move out of the apartment complex if they absolutely feel the need to, but the vast majority of other housing is taken up by NPCs.
Can the characters have pets?
For those who store or manifest pets (i.e. Pokemon or Dream Eaters from Kingdom Hearts), they may bring as many as they can carry on their person. (For example, six Pokemon or three Dream Eaters) For more conventional pets like cats or dogs, one may be brought with.

But it doesn't stop there! As of the 3rd and 4th District becoming available to characters, animals of all kinds can be bought as pets! Cats, dogs, goldfish, even more exotic pets like turtleducks can be found!

Far as the physical contact quota goes, being in contact with pets from home has about half the stabilization effect as that of other characters. Apped/appable animals count for the full stabilization effect, as they are considered actual characters.

Those obtained from the game itself, however, have little to no affect. Hearth kittens obtained in the December event, however, are the exception to this as they have about half the stabilization effect.
What’s the weather like in the town? The day/night cycle?
The overall seasonal pattern of the city follows more of a dry and rainy season, with a few weeks in late December and early January where snow falls. The day and night cycle is virtually identical to that of Earth except that the world Saeng Seong is on has two moons: a smaller one, and a larger one. Details can be found on the Setting page.

Oh boy. This question is a doozy. Um... can we use threads from [community profile] the_love_hotel for our interaction samples? I promise that the samples I plan to use don't actually contain any smut, but if it's a no-go, that's okay too. Just means I'll be scurrying around a bit for the interaction sample.

I've got a question. How are character powers handled if those powers directly affect their ability to touch others?

I'm thinking of two examples here. First is Rogue from X-men. Second is Equius Zahhak from Homestuck, who's so ridiculously STRONG that he badly bruises or fractures others just by lightly touching them, as gently as possible.

Example being the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series where you determine the Pokemon you and your partner are, as well as names, but that's all.

Would a game transplant be allowed that was in two games prior to this one?

If not could the character be applied as a transplant from the second game with only vague memories of the game before it? (i.e. not really remembering being in the first world, but perhaps seeing someone they knew in the first game and feeling they appear oddly familiar, without knowing why.)

hello! two quick questions regarding imported characters:

1) if i were to bring in my character directly from another game (as in, they never returned to their canon world after being dropped and ended up here instead), would they be able to keep anything they were carrying at the time? like a small pet or trinket, for example?

2) out of curiosity, if a character was given powers at their previous game but did not have any in canon, would they keep them or would they be gone because they're not part of the game's setting? i'm guessing the answer is the latter, but clarification could be helpful for anybody else importing a character.

thank you in advance!

re: pets & such.

I see more convenient animals like dogs and cats are allowed, but for the sake of asking for some FE:A people: Some have classes that allow them to have a horse, or a pegasus, or even like Gerome here (and Cherche) a wyvern. Wyvern are only slightly larger than pegasi (which obviously is just a horse with wings), but I wanted to ask anyways on the behalf that Gerome has a very close connection to his own wyvern, Minerva. related to past history events, Minerva is someone he has learn to rely on and even see her as family.

so whether she comes with him or not depends on how he'll behave-- so basically my question is, how are animals of those category determined? unlike let's say Toothless in "How to Train Your Dragon," they wouldn't really be considered as appable animals so.. yeah!

Just want to make sure I understand the AC requirements correctly.
When you say "One post on the log (with at least 5 comments from you total)" you mean that a player would post a log then reply to people who reply to their log at least five times. Right?

When you say any combo of two does that mean it needs to be two different types or could someone comment a lot on two people's logs and pass with 2x comment on someone else's log?

"Commentspam... does not count" Is this a prose based community?

Thanks!

I'm apping from a dating sim/visual novel that has multiple paths, although any of those paths could be considered "canon". If I give you samples, do those samples have to be taken from the same canon point/path as the path I'm apping into, just like how you can't use AU samples to app an OU character?

I have a question regarding currency; it says that characters aren't required to get a job (and I'm assuming they don't need money to buy things like food and clothes), but they can get a part-time job if they like. You also say that "a portable device can be purchased ICly later on in the game."

So my question is, are non-essential things like cell phones free? And if not, do they get money or any sort of rewards for working that they could save for something like it?

Wouldn't it make more sense to reward characters for maintaining physical contact with each other (through perks, either physical ones like augmented or gifted powers, or...whatever, just so long as there's variety), instead of the whole "you-have-to-do-this-or-else" angle? Why is there a punishment angle at all, instead of just varying degrees of reward?

Because some people are skeeved at the idea of forced physical intimacy, rather than it just being rewarded. Not to mention it makes the "no dubcon, no exceptions" rule seem a little out of place, since the mandated physical contact itself is already dancing on the dubcon morality line as it is (since the choice is ultimately "get cuddly, or get sick and eventually die," which isn't really a choice at all). I know hugs aren't the same as getting someone totally hammered and taking advantage of them later, but it's still pretty sketchy.

Definitely not in belittlement of your original point (it is entirely valid and I personally understand where you're coming from) and I am not a mod or anyone affiliated with the game to answer this, but there is an additional rewards system for cuddling beyond what's necessary to survive. I don't know if it at all addresses your concerns, but I hope it helps in some manner.

You said that characters would automatically hear things as though in their native tongue but how would that work if their native tongue was not normally the one used for a good part of the communication in-canon? To use Lord of the Rings as an example because it's complicated and dumb, nearly every distinct species has at least one language to its name (there's Dwarvish, at least three dialects of Elvish, way more than three regional dialects of Orcish, the Black Speech etc) HOWEVER the Lingua Franca for Middle Earth is Westron, and is almost always the language used for interspecies communication. This is part for the sake of practicality and part because some languages are super hard to learn - for example Dwarves actually go out of their way to make sure that nobody but Dwarves really learn how to speak Dwarvish/Khuzdul.

To make matters a little more complicated the Elves, at least, have a Lingua Franca among themselves on top of the basic interspecies communication default of Westron. Most elves when speaking among other elves use Sindarin, including the ones who are old enough that they originally spoke Quenya. Quenya, though technically their native language, is these days the Elvish equivalent of Latin, and has not been widely spoken for like six thousand years or so in-canon.

tl;dr my character's native language is a language he would not actually expect anyone outside other elves to understand unless they proved the spoke Elvish, but he also fluently speaks Westron, which is the default interacting-with-other-peoples-when-there'd-be-a-language-barrier language.

How... how would this work? Would he hear the language he expected to hear, and would his actual native tongue - which few would speak - still sound like a foreign language to those who didn't speak it when they heard it? Or would he be left doubletaking and confused at why suddenly all these people are communicating in Elvish? (or a language that's been dead for the past two and a half ages or their secret language that none must know or w/e w/e)

I just realized my character might try to call home once he realizes he still has his cell phone. Should I assume that the call/text doesn't go through or perhaps there's "no service"?
