Setting

Setting

Saeng Seong is a moderately large city divided into eight districts, walled off from the outside world. As such, most of its buildings and infrastructure lies within these two hundred feet tall stone walls. Walking directly from one side of the city to the other would take a couple hours, though of course there's no road that goes straight from one side to another. The architecture is quite similar to ancient oriental buildings, with strongly sloped, tiled roofs, many covered balconies and outdoor walkways. Inside you'll find the interior decorations are more modern, though many kinds of electronics - particularly televisions - are less common than you might expect.

As of December 2013, five of the eight districts are safe to explore.

Outside, however, is another story. While the architecture is the same, climbing the walls whether with cliff climbing gear (but why do that when there is a stairway to an observation tower?) will give an idea of the world beyond. It becomes obvious that they have been maintained even less so than most buildings and roads that exist within the stone walls, and any sign of roads are no longer visible within a mile of the city limits.

The day and night cycle is not unlike that of Earth, however the seasons tend to be split between "dry" and "rainy", with some snow during December and January. The planet also has two moons which can be seen from the night sky - a larger yellow-gold one and a smaller white one. Stars are also visible, though the constellations do not match any ones the characters might know.

District 1
The residential district
One of the city's residential district, this district contains more high-density residential housing, particularly apartments. The streets are narrow, too narrow to admit most motor vehicles, though bicycles are an option for those who find walking too slow. There is the occasional collection of stores - particularly grocery and convenience stores, but it's mostly housing here and the buildings needed to support a great number of people.

This district borders one of the city's two rivers, and though the riverside beach fluctuates in size depending on the water level, visiting it is still a fairly popular pastime.
Key locales and landmarks
  • (1) The Guest Apartments
  • (2) Beachside Shack - One of the more recreational areas of the First District, the Beachside Shack is home to one of the best restaurants, and has some water equipment available for rental, particularly in the form of inner tubes and fishing supplies, though there's not too much to catch unfortunately.
  • (3) Learning Center - It looks like this place used to be a school, but it's clearly been remodeled and repurposed. Now it functions more as a sort of trade school, with focuses on sciences and other vocations. Non-natives are welcome to visit and explore, and make use of the resources to be found here, though characters might be asked to refrain from entering or interfering with rooms where experiments are going on.
District 2
The administrative district
This is the city's administrative district, with most of the structures being government buildings of some kind. It's mostly quiet, with not too much in the way of street protests, and most officials moving efficiently from building to building as needed. It's also home to several services that help characters, such as the arrival point, the Guest Help Center, and the hospital.

There are some commercial centers here, more than in District 1. There is a little bit more variety too, including plenty of restaurants and other small businesses. It's no commercial district, but there should be plenty of jobs available, should new arrivals want them.
Key locales and landmarks
  • (4) Arrival Point and Guest Help Center - the arrival point for all new guests is a large circular plaza, with intricately tiled ground beneath their feet. The Guest Help Center is where all new arrivals are taken to, and where they might go if they need some kind of help. The staff there are always on hand to help non-natives.
  • (5) The City Hospital, Chiyo Municipal - Quite like a normal, albeit large, hospital, this medical center also features a wing devoted almost entirely to the new arrivals. If a character has unique medical need, they'll likely be visiting this place fairly often. If a character goes too long without physical contact, or suffers from any other number of unusual medical problems while in the city, they may end up here as well.
  • (6) Government Headquarters - The building where most executive decisions regarding policy and such in the city are made. Guests are welcome to come and observe all open sessions. However, the building seems to be fairly quiet of late, and trying to talk to most policymakers will cause them to point you in the direction of the Guest Help Center.
District 3
The main shopping district
The premiere shopping district of the city, constantly abuzz with people going about business of some kind. Most of the buildings here have shops in at least the lowest floor of the building, with a few shopkeepers having apartments above their stores. Anything your characters might want to buy is here, from food to clothes to technology, even furniture if they want to pick up something a little different for their apartment. Scattered between the shops are restaurants, arcades, coffee shops - all the little places that help support people out for a long day of shopping.

Characters looking for jobs are most likely to find them here, as well; even if it's not particularly needed, most native shopkeepers are willing to hire on one or two visitors. There's also a few empty places, if you want to open up something of your own, although those are a bit more out-of-the-way than simply getting a job at someone's storefront.
Key locales and landmarks
  • (7) Saeng Seong Convention Center - The largest convention center in the city. Now that the third district is available for general use, many of the rooms in the center can be rented out for official meetings, though some weekends the entire place is booked for various events. If you want to put on something big and can't think of where to have it, this is probably your best bet.
  • (8) The Mall - The wide, sprawling mall is home to a variety of different sorts of shops. There's a lot to see and do here and the food court has a surprisingly decent, if a little pricey, selection. The department stores are known for running sales every so often, which means it should be pretty easy to outfit your apartment with whatever you want - provided you have enough saved up, of course.
  • (9) The Outdoor Marketplace - The street is filled each and every day with people peddling their wares - which are a wide array of almost everything you can imagine. Much of what is sold here is handmade, which means that it won't be easy to get duplicates of your purchases, but hey. They'll be unique, right?
District 4
The recreational district
A break in the modern feel of the city, the city's park district is full of wide open spaces and recreational spaces. When this district reopened, small animals started running around the city again, so it's not surprising that you'll find a lot of strays around here (and an animal shelter, too!). There are little playgrounds scattered throughout, as well as fields that look like they would be good for sporting events.
Key locales and landmarks
  • (10) Dog Park - Exactly what it says on the tin, this is a gated area with walking paths specifically for people with pets. You'll find a lot of strays here, but generally these are well-behaved and won't bother someone spending time with their friends, normal or furry.

Speaking of furry friends, anyone who is looking to adopt can find a recently reopened animal shelter run by a married man and woman just outside of the park.
  • (11) The Gym - A modern gymnasium equipped with anything your characters might be looking for. Along the walls you'll also see a lot of plaques and trophies from sporting events - looks like the city used to have some champion teams! The gym is also equipped with an indoor and outdoor pool, a volleyball court, and a track and field area, as well as equipment for any sporting activities that characters are free to use, provided they sign off before taking them off the premises (like checking out a library book!).

There are also two ball pits a short walk from the gym, one with a sign that says "For Children" and one that says "For adults".
  • (12) The Pond - A lovely natural area The grass is growing stronger and greener here in most places, and there are quite a few trees as well. There's a small park close by with a lot of playing equipment for children, like slides, a swing set, a seesaw, and more. In fact, this area looks like it would have been a good place for children and families to gather. It would be perfect for a picnic, assuming the weather was good.

If you walk around to the other side of the pond, there is a small red shrine.
  • (13) The Sacred Gardens - An old temple. The sloped roof is detailed with tiny designs, hard to make out from the ground, and the dark wooden double doors have splashes of color in all four corners, in swirling circular patterns - deep blue in the upper right, white in the upper left, moss green in the lower right, and red-orange in the lower left. It is notable that the grass and even a few flowers are growing very strongly here.

Inside the front room itself is simple and wooden, like the outside, and there more flowers painted on the walls in the same order as the door, along with four candles in the corners and a red lantern hanging from the ceiling. If you follow the small hallway to the left, you'll step into the main attraction - a place much like a zen garden, with a man-made pond full of fast-moving, but graceful multicolored fish, and flowers inexplicably growing in the the sand in the four corners. There isn't much else here, but if you need a place for quiet reflection, this is it.

  • (14) Chocobo Barn - It's a barn. Built for chocobos and chocobo chicks.
District 5
The entertainment district
A wide assortment of shops, theaters, and the like, dedicated for relaxing or for fun. The main hub is along the riverfront, and most activity seems to be drawn there. After the sun goes down, there's still a bustle of activity as the lights from various attractions come on, giving visitors something to do all night long.
Key locales and landmarks
  • (15) Boardwalk -The boardwalk is a section that stretches all along the riverside of the fifth district, and features an assortment of shops along the main section, and even a small amusement park at the south end! The rides include a large ferris wheel that lights up at night, a small roller coaster, a carousel that features both traditional horses and more fanciful animals (some of which can be found at the nearby zoo and aquarium) and a second aerial carousel that has what looks like a strange hybrid of planes and airships to ride in. Shops include clothing, food, and a few novelties and curios.

  • (16) Aquarium - The aquarium features, among other things, an underwater tunnel, complete with a walkway on one side and a moving track on the other! Visitors can walk or stand on the platform at their leisure, (or sit on benches along the far wall!) and look up at schools of multi colored rainbow koi fish and other interesting or colorful fish. There's also an exhibit that features an animal that looks a lot like an otter-armadillo hybrid.

  • (17) Zoo - The zoo contains a few common animals that you might expect to find in south east asia. But there are also some unique creatures and noteworthy exhibits, including animals that look a lot like guardian lion statues, but with a lot more live muscle and fur. There's also a butterfly sanctuary, an aviary, and creatures that look like relatives of the red panda. In addition, there's a bit of a charge in the air with these animals, and even some local domesticated creatures outside of the zoo and scattered around the city. Time will tell what it might fully be!

  • (18) Hot Springs - A small hot springs just off the river, with three bathing areas; one for men, one for women, and one that's communal. There's even a small bath house as well!

  • (19) Theater - This location serves as a curious double duty; it has large pull down screens that movies can be shown on, as well as having a massive backstage for traditional theater and operas.
District 6
The transportation district
The unlocking of the sixth district brought with it veichles, whether they be land, water, or aircraft. Public or private transportation now accessible, one could almost say the city is becoming more like its old self again...
Key locales and landmarks
  • (20) Monotrac Central Station - With the unlocking of the sixth of nine districts, the monorails make their appearance, appearing along the walls that divide the city. The main station of Saeng Seong was once a buzzling hub of trade and commerce, but has since begun to rust and in need of repairs. Several locals have begun work on the glass ceiling, and there is always work to be had. At least the pay and food from the internal-based restaurants are good?

  • (21) Public Transportation Hub - Whether it be buses that run on solar power and happy faces, or airships that travel from district six to district three, there's an option for everyone. Less run down than the Monotrac Station, several locals have begun cleanup of the different storefronts in hopes that guests could start businesses and stores.

  • (22) Goblin Motors Dealership - Looking for a personal car that can take you somewhere without relying upon the public transportation? Have enough credit to purchase one? Then Goblin Motors is the place! Whether it's a car for inner-city travels, or a van or truck for those travels beyond the walls, they have the most high tech vehicles available!

  • (23) Mindy's Menders - ...Though if it's repairs after taking a turn a little too tight or any other type of collision, then it's down the street to Mindy's for you! Their service is only second to their smiles, and those are some white teeth behind the oil and soot-stained cheeks.

  • (24) Fenrir Motorcycles - Looking for something that takes less space or just love the feeling of the wind hitting your face? Then Fenrir Motorcyles is the place for you! Though oddly, they only sell two-seater motorcycles and side cars... Weird.

  • (25) Typhoon Seacrafts - Want to purchase a motorboat without constant rental fees? Then look no further than Typhoon Seacrafts! All boats have built in elemental converters to protect passengers from the dangers of stormy seas! It's like the outside is close to an ocean or something...

  • (26) Kramer's Corner - But if you prefer the joys of repairing your own automobiles (or are a robot/person of the cybernetic enhancement persuasion), then Kramer's Corner is the store for you! Where if they don't have the item in stock, they synthesize it for you in store! ...Provided you have the schematics, of course.
District 7
The education district
The once bustling suburban area with schools for all ages. Small family homes and bachelor pads line the mostly empty streets.
Key locales and landmarks
  • (27a) Nero Elementary School - Open to students ages five to eleven (Kindergarden to Grade 4), this school is perhaps the most abandoned of them all. Bright colors of the paper decorations have faded in the years of disuse, thick dust and the occasional cobweb still being swept from the halls as they prepare for new students. However oddly enough, the library seems to be untouched, providing books of fiction as well as workbooks filled with math problems and writing styles. Oddly enough, no history or geography books are in sight.

  • (27b) Weiss Intermediary School - Open to students ages twelve to fourteen (Grade 5 to 8), this school has seen better days.

  • (27c) Azure High School - Open to students ages fifteen to eighteen (Grade 9-12), this school is in slightly less disrepair than the others geared for minors. Decorations and school fliers from a century ago have faded in the years of disuse, thin films of dust and the occasional cobweb still being swept from the halls as they prepare for new students. However oddly enough, the library seems to be untouched, providing books of fiction as well as workbooks filled with math problems and writing styles. Oddly enough, no history or geography books are in sight.

  • (28) Vermillion School of the Arts - For those seeking further education in either design of any kind, performance art, culinary, or music, Vermillion School of the Arts has it covered. Whether you are still in Intermediary School or are a robot who is curious as to what metahumans consume and how to prepare it, there is a class at your level open.

  • (29) Phoenix School of the Sciences - If science and technologies are more up to your speed, then look no further than the oddly-named college of Phoenix SotA.

  • (30) Vortex School of Aviation - Always wanted to spread your wings and soar? Never born with wings but still want to be able to feel the clouds brush against your face and not have your feet firmly on ol' terra firma? Then look no further than the ironically-named Vortex School of Aviation!

  • (31) Repose Residential - A former housing project for businessmen/women and their families who grew tired of the commute from the first district to the ninth, or wanted to live closer to the schools, Repose Residential is a quiet apartment complex that was more aptly a ghost town prior to the reopening of the district. Guests may even find a century-old toy still lying around these fully-furnished apartments...
