Large animals/creatures, such as horses or wyvren or something like that would be allowed, under the same rules as dogs or cats, so long as they wouldn't be considered an appable character. The "more conventional" animals stipulation merely refers to pets and animals that are always physically present, and aren't stored/dismissed to a hammerspace dimension of some kind.
