Mai | Avatar: the Last Airbender
Canon: OU
Previous Canon Point: Post Book 3, Episode 10 "The Day of Black Sun, Part 1: The Invasion"
New Canon Point: Post "Rebound" comic
Significant changes due to new canon point:
The most significant of changes is Mai's on again off again relationship with Zuko. She managed to confront him about his leaving her with just a letter to break it off at Boiling Rock, found herself locked up in a prison cell in his place and then she goes against Azula in order to save him. This lands both her and Ty Lee in prison until the end of the series. She manages to have herself sprung from jail and while Ty Lee goes to join the Kiyoshi Warriors, Mai goes to patch things up with Zuko, who's taken the throne as Fire Lord.
It works... for a while at least. Eventually Zuko grows consumed by his own self-doubts and develops a near paranoia over the idea of assassins. Mai brings the Kiyoshi Warriors to help guard him after complaining about how he keeps leaving and not telling her anything about it.
The final straw for Mai is when it comes to light thanks to Suki that Zuko has been speaking with Ozai. It's yet another thing he couldn't confide in her about and another secret he holds. Mai leaves the Palace telling Zuko that he'll have an easier time keeping his secrets if he is alone.
As of now in canon, the pair have split up yet again. This split up is far different from the one Mai has endured from her current canon point. She was the one who went through with this one and she's done so with a sense of it needing to be done rather than her wishing to do so. She isn't bitter over the breakup but rather sadly accepting of it.
She's shown still bearing a great deal of loyalty to Zuko even in the face of her father's Ozai group. It's clear she doesn't hate Zuko and feels no need to be so petty as to ruin his hold on the throne. At the end of the comic, she is shown quietly contemplating the picture of her and Zuko done shortly after his return to the Fire Nation before joining the Avatar. She thinks back fondly to those times and misses the man even if she feels their separation was for the best.
In short, Mai's personality is less bitter, less full of hurt and pain as it has been. She'll return sadly accepting the end of her relationship and while still grieving it looking for how to continue on with her like.
