Character: Rei Ryugazaki butterflop Canon: [OU] Free! - Iwatobi Swim Club Previous Canon Point: Episode 8, before Rin and Haru's race in prefecturals. New Canon Point: End of Episode 12
Significant changes due to new canon point:
After what happened in the prefectural tournament, Rei is finally informed of who exactly Rin is, and his connection to the other boys on the swim team. Armed with this knowledge and the resulting confrontation, Rei begins to realize how important the others are to him, growing fiercely defensive of them in the wake of Rin's behavior leaving the others downtrodden and confused. He realizes fully that these guys are his friends, and the best ones he could ever ask for. This realization drives him to practice his swimming in earnest, giving way to a significant improvement of his stroke and overall time despite a few goggle malfunctions here and there.
On top of getting to know the others on the team, he finally learns why Rin has acted as he had, and why it is he swims. It is learning of everyone's true motivations, including his own purpose, that Rei makes the decision to temporarily give away his spot on the swim team, so that the boys can finally swim together again and discover the same epiphany he had. Though Rei's decision blows their chance of making it to nationals, the boys are finally happy again, motivated again.
The results of his actions speak immensely of Rei's changes ever since he'd joined the swim team: By the end he's more relaxed around the others, smiling a little more and he truly feels like he belongs in the group rather than feeling like the inadequate odd one out. He learns that perhaps calculations can be put aside every once in a while, that perfection can be achieved by will, rather than crunching numbers. In terms of Saeng Seong, he'll stop being a resistant blockhead and see to aiding others if the lack of touch ails them, and be a bit more social.
